Sunscreens: The Truth About Absorption and Safety

Do sunscreens actually get absorbed into the blood? Find out how sun protection works and whether sunscreens are safe for your health. Analysis of different types of filters and their effects on the body.

Disinformation about sunscreens and absorption into the blood

Today we will clear up another myth that sunscreens are bad for your health! There has been a lot of misinformation on social media lately about the dangers of sunscreens. One of the myths that is being repeated is that sunscreens are absorbed into the bloodstream and are dangerous to your health.

How do UV filters work in sun protection cosmetics?

Cosmetics with UV filters owe their effectiveness to a protective layer on the skin's surface. They act as a shield that is designed to absorb, reflect and disperse UV radiation, protecting the skin from its direct effects. UV radiation can lead to premature skin aging and serious skin and body diseases.

Are substances from sunscreen creams absorbed into the blood?

The main function of the skin is to act as a barrier against external factors. Substances that penetrate the skin must have the right balance of lipophilic and hydrophilic. The skin has a complex structure, so a given substance must pass through these layers to enter the bloodstream. Chemical sunscreens are lipophilic, but most of them stay in the stratum corneum of the epidermis, not penetrating the bloodstream.

Safety and effectiveness of sunscreens

New generation organic (chemical) sunscreens are designed to not penetrate the skin easily. FDA studies have shown that only a fraction of a percent of these filters are absorbed. Mineral filters can penetrate the skin, especially if they have small molecules. Orientana combines organic and mineral filters, providing protection and comfort.

Cosmetics safety and European standards

Cosmetic products, including sunscreens, must undergo strict assessments before being introduced to the market. Sunscreens are subject to European Union restrictions. It is worth investing in proven cosmetics that have been tested and are approved for use in the EU.
