The date palm is best known for its sweet, nutritious fruit. It has been cultivated for about 8,000 years. The date palm grows to a height of about 25 meters, its trunk reaches 60 cm in diameter, and its leaves are about 5 meters long. Date fruits are mentioned in the Bible and the Quran and have been important in Indian mythology. Thousands of years ago, traditional Indian medicine used an infusion or paste made from this fruit to treat sore throats, colds, and coughs. Furthermore, due to its tannin content, the fruit was also used as a laxative and astringent for intestinal ailments. It was supposedly helpful in alcohol poisoning. Fermented date drink was called the "drink of life." Today, dried fruits are added to animal feed in the desert due to their powerful nutritional properties. Date extract has a wide range of uses in cosmetics. The fruit is composed of over 70% simple sugars, such as glucose, fructose, maltose, and sucrose. This gives it a strong moisturizing, soothing, and nourishing effect on the skin. It is rich in phenolic acids, such as protocatechuic acid, vanillic acid, ferulic acid, gallic acid, and caffeic acid, which have powerful antioxidant and soothing properties, and help brighten skin discolorations. The phytosterols and phytoestrogens present in the extract have anti-aging, soothing, and elasticizing effects on the skin, and strengthen the skin barrier. Date fruit contains large amounts of vitamins – vitamin C (ascorbic acid) and B vitamins (thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid) – which have antioxidant, brightening, and soothing effects on the skin. Additionally, minerals such as potassium, phosphorus, calcium and iron remineralise the skin, have a regulating effect and support the soothing effect of the extract.
